Impotence and the Effect It Has on Men

Impotence is defined by Wikipedia as a condition where a person is unable to achieve or retain an erection. It can also mean a loss of sexual desire or inability to achieve or sustain an erection. Impotence has many different defined types. In order for you to be able to determine whether or not you suffer from impotence it helps to understand exactly what each type is.

Erectile dysfunction has a number of different defined forms. There can be physical impotence where the patient cannot achieve or hold an erection sufficient enough to complete sexual intercourse. At times, a man may actually lose an erection before he wants it, and this too is classified as impotence physical. Another common type of impotence is erectile dysfunction caused by psychological factors.

Impotence can be caused by physical reasons. When a man suffers from physical impotence it may be caused by a physical condition such as a neurological condition such as stroke, brain tumor or head injury, or a hormonal or nervous system disorder such as diabetes. Such medical conditions require specific treatment, and it is important to seek medical attention if you feel that your impotence is as a result of a medical condition. If you do not seek medical attention, it is possible that you will ignore your symptoms, only treating it when the condition worsens.

On the other hand, there are a number of psychological conditions such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, alcoholism, drug abuse or neurological disorders that can lead to impotence as well. Psychological issues related to impotence can often be treated using cognitive behavioral therapy. Medications can also help with psychological issues as well as blood pressure medication. If your blood pressure is high then there are certain medications that can lower it, including beta blockers for hypertension.

There are a number of other health issues that can lead to impotence, including those relating to the internal organs. Some physical problems can interfere with blood flow and as a result increase stress levels. These include problems with the urinary tract as a result of bladder dysfunction or prostate cancer, or problems with the kidneys as a result of kidney disease. Chronic anxiety can also increase stress levels, resulting in a weakened pelvic floor and increased risk for impotence.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should seek immediate medical care. Impotence can be very serious and if left untreated could lead to complications such as incontinence. If you suspect that you are suffering from impotence, you should immediately tell your medical care professional of your concerns. Many times there can be many different underlying causes for your symptoms, and being able to discuss them with your doctor can help them find a proper treatment plan. Impotence is not a common problem but it can be a very embarrassing one for men. When seeking medical care, you should ensure that your doctor is aware of all symptoms you may be experiencing so that they can offer you appropriate treatment.
